Season 1 Episode 7: Tea and Milk
In this episode, we're visiting Mathew Wong at Tea and Milk, in Astoria, Queens New York, to make their Vegan Taro Root Milk Boba Tea.
"Made with our homemade taro root puree blended with our Nigiri Blue Mountain Black Tea and coconut milk." -Tea and Milk
While we visited their Astoria location, Tea and Milk actually also have an outpost in Manhattan’s Chelsea Market as well (plus they do loads of festivals and pop-ups), so, you have options! I was really shocked when Mat told me that they were the only Boba Tea shop in the US that uses real taro root in their teas, something that’s right in the name itself! As you’ll hear him explain, it’s a common thing to use the powder because it’s cheaper and requires a lot less labor. But, the result of using real ingredients, made fresh, really shows in their products.
Everything there was thoughtfully made, with quality ingredients, and, like I said, it really makes a difference! They have lots of variations of their drinks, including vegan options, so, there really is something for everyone! And, it was a super cool experience to be able to make the boba myself (been drinking/eating them for years, and can say that I had never made them before)!
