Which Cookies Are Healthy? Because Sometimes You Want to Pretend You're Being Good
In my series of cookie questions, another one of the top questions was, “Which Cookies Are Healthy?”.
Here’s the thing, the word “healthy” can be very polarizing. And when we’re talking about cookies, typically not in that category, it can get a little confusing. So here’s what I’d like to say first- a cookie is not a necessity in your daily food intake, and more of a bonus, so it should be something that you enjoy! While most cookies are considered indulgent treats, there are some options that contain whole grains, nuts, seeds, fruits, eliminating chocolates and candies, which, might put it into the “healthier” category. Here are a few examples of cookies that are relatively healthier compared to traditional options:
Oatmeal Cookies: Oats are high in fiber and contain important nutrients like iron and magnesium. Opt for recipes that use whole oats and limit added sugars.
Almond Flour Cookies: Almond flour is lower in carbohydrates and higher in protein and healthy fats compared to traditional flour. Look for recipes that use almond flour as the base.
Fruit and Nut Cookies: Cookies made with dried fruits like raisins or cranberries and nuts like almonds or walnuts can add nutritional value in the form of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Banana Cookies: Mashed ripe bananas can serve as a natural sweetener and binder in cookie recipes, reducing the need for added sugars and fats.
Flourless Peanut Butter Cookies: Made with just peanut butter, sugar, and egg, these cookies are high in protein and healthy fats.
When making or purchasing cookies, look for options that use wholesome ingredients like whole grains, nuts, seeds, and fruits. Additionally, consider portion sizes and enjoy cookies as an occasional treat as part of a balanced diet. Note that I am not a dietician or medical professional, and these are just opinions based on the benefits of those ingredients. Personally, I would rather have a cookie that’s delicious and satiates, rather than a few that lack in the qualities you’re craving and looking for in a treat! But, a balance of both practices might be just what you’re looking for.
