Where Cookies Originated: The Story of Cookie Origins

In my series of cookie questions, another one of the top questions was, “Where Cookies Originated”.

Cookies, as we know them today, have a long history that spans centuries and continents. The concept of combining flour, sweeteners, and fats to create small, portable, and easily shareable treats dates back to ancient times. The word "cookie" itself comes from the Dutch word "koekie," which means little cake.

The origins of cookies can be traced back to Persia (modern-day Iran), where early cookies were likely made with ingredients like dates, nuts, and honey. From there, the concept of cookies spread to Europe, where it became popular among the wealthy and elite. By the Middle Ages, cookies had become common in Europe, with many different varieties being made.

During the Renaissance, European explorers and settlers brought cookies to the Americas, where they quickly became popular. Early American cookies were often made with ingredients like oats, molasses, and spices.

Today, cookies are enjoyed all over the world and come in countless varieties, with each culture adding its own unique twist to the classic treat.
