S4 Ep 12: The History Of Bananas With Guest Danielle Becker

In this episode, we’re chatting with Danielle Becker, founder and CEO of Lefty's Right Mind, who joins us to discuss the history of her favorite food: bananas.

The Complex Love for Bananas
Danielle has a deep and complex relationship with bananas, dubbing them her "survival food." She's faced some playful scrutiny for purchasing around 30 bananas weekly! Despite the teasing, Danielle defends her passion, emphasizing the banana's affordability, health benefits, and versatility.

Bananas in Our World
Bananas have traveled far and wide, originating about 7,000 years ago in Southeast Asia. They weren’t always the sweet, seedless varieties we know today. Early cultivators in Papua New Guinea selected the sweetest, softest versions, leading to the modern banana's global journey.

Danielle and I explored one of the historical favorites, the Gros Michel, known for its rich and creamy taste—so distinct that it inspired the artificial banana flavoring we recognize today. Unfortunately, the Gros Michel was nearly wiped out by Panama disease, prompting the rise of today’s Cavendish variety.

The Banana Variety and Its Uses
Today, most people know the Cavendish banana, but there are over a thousand other varieties! There's the red banana with a hint of raspberry, the starchy plantain found in Caribbean dishes, and the blue Java, which tastes like vanilla ice cream. Who knew bananas could be so diverse?

Bananas aren't just diverse in flavor—they’re a powerhouse of nutrients, packed with potassium, vitamins, and even tryptophan, aiding serotonin production. They are technically berries; a fact that often surprises many!

Banana Passion in Action
Danielle shares her love for using bananas in various ways. From raw slices in her cereal to making her family’s renowned banana bread, bananas are a staple ingredient in her household. Whether it’s banana pancakes or smoothies, she has a method for using bananas at every stage of ripeness.

And don’t forget about banana’s appearance in popular culture. From Gwen Stefani's catchy spelling lesson in "Hollaback Girl" to Elvis’s legendary snack and even Andy Warhol's iconic art, bananas have left their mark well beyond the grocery aisle.

Future of Bananas
Looking forward, the world might see changes in banana varieties. Scientists are working towards finding a replacement or a new hybrid to combat challenges like diseases threatening the current industry standard.

Danielle and I agree that bananas have earned their place as kitchen icons, brimming with versatility and health benefits. From sweet to savory, bananas continue to charm the culinary world.
