Season 1 Episode 1: Moon Man
In this episode, we're visiting Nigel Sielegar at Moon Man, on the Lower East Side of New York City, within Essex Market's Market Line, to make Indonesian Coconut Pancakes.
"Originally known as "Kue Pancong", or "Kue Rangin", this street food in the form of coconut pancake is slowly disappearing from the streets of Indonesia. Currently, Moon Man has 10 different signature toppings that include, chocolate, peanuts, black sesame, and the famous Java Palm Sugar." -Moon Man
This was my first experience with Indonesian Coconut Pancakes, and I have to say, while I didn’t have anything to compare it to (because these are really not present here in the US, and really just in Indonesia), these were so delicious! The texture was amazing, they were light, yet hearty, creamy, but had the added textures of shredded coconut, and the bruleed top’s crispness, and additional coconut topping. At Moon Man, they also have some other South Asian desserts, along with their Kaya Jam.
The great thing about their location (they’re also at Queens Night Market on the weekend), is that there are also so many other food vendors within Essex Market. So, make sure to go visit Moon Man first, and then check out some of the other food options there!
