How Long To Bake Brownies

In my series of brownie questions, one of the top questions was, “How Long To Bake Brownies?”.

The baking time for brownies is going to depend on the recipe you’re using, as well as the pan size, and your desired texture. Unless you’re inventing your own recipe from scratch without any guardrails, my biggest tip is to just follow the recipe’s instructions. Might seem super obvious, so the other thing I’ll note is, if you’re using a recipe from a food publication online or a blog (or any page or platform that allows comments/reviews), head down to the comments section and see if anyone, or multiple people, are making mention of varying bake time. Not all ovens are made equal, or properly calibrated, so, a few minutes here and there are normal. However, if you’re noticing people talk about the temperature or the bake time in a significant way, make a mental note. It doesn’t mean that their comments will apply to you, but, it definitely could be helpful.

As a general rule of thumb, it will typically take around 25-35 minutes to bake a batch of brownies. Again, refer to your particular recipe to confirm.

The key is to check them near the end of the suggested baking time. Insert a toothpick into the center and if it comes out with some crumbs (not wet batter), they’re done. If the toothpick comes out completely clean, they’re likely overdone in some capacity (still edible for sure, but won’t be fudgy). The great thing about checking early is, you can always bake longer but once the batch is over-baked, they’re over-baked.
