Can Cookies Go Bad? How Long Do They Really Last?

In my series of cookie questions, another one of the top questions was, “Can Cookies Go Bad?”.

Have you ever wondered how long they actually last? It's a question that has plagued cookie lovers for generations, but fear not, we're diving into the sweet science of shelf life.

Now, we all know that cookies can't last forever (as much as we wish they could). Stale cookies are the bane of our existence, with their dry, crumbly texture that's just not the same. And let's not even mention the horror of a rancid cookie, the result of fats like butter or nuts going bad, leaving behind a taste and smell that's, well, less than pleasant.

To keep your cookies as fresh as possible, store them in an airtight container at room temperature. This helps protect them from moisture and air, which can speed up the staling process. And whatever you do, resist the urge to store them in the fridge. The moisture in the fridge can actually make your cookies go stale faster, and who wants a cold, soggy cookie anyway?

If you find yourself with more cookies than you can eat (is that even possible?), consider freezing them. Freezing cookies is a great way to extend their shelf life, allowing you to enjoy them for months to come. Just be sure to store them in an airtight container or resealable bag to prevent freezer burn.

While cookies may not last forever, they certainly bring a lot of joy during their time with us. So, the next time you indulge in a cookie, savor every bite, knowing that its time with you is precious. And if you happen to have some cookies that are past their prime, don't worry—there's always room for a fresh batch!
